Uganda 2020

In 2020, PureDrops will operate in Uganda for the second time. In Uganda, less than 35 percent of the people living in rural areas have access to basic water and almost 10 percent only have access to surface water. Furthermore, more than 40 percent of the population needs to walk for more than 30 minutes to their closest water source. This leads people do use and drink unsafe water which is one of the leading causes of death and disease across Uganda. Especially, children are vulnerable with more than 4000 dying every year due to diarrhoea caused by unsafe water. Alsothe task of sourcing water is usually performed by women and girls, leading to a high level of gender inequality with regards to obtaining education and professional skills.

This year, the SIM 16 generation will build on the partnership with the Uganda-based organisation SPOUTS of Water and contribute to the overall goal of PureDrops: to provide access to clean drinking water to those most in need. In particular, we will focus on ensuring access spots for children and how to raise awareness of the dangers of unsafe water.

We will reach our goal in two ways:

1. Directly, by donating water filters to schools & communities in need

2. Indirectly, by helping our partner SPOUTS of Water to provide
rural families with filters

Our Approach

Our approach this year is based on three pillars:

1. “Transforming the Middle Man” of SPOUTS of Water and helping the NGO with regard to their business case

2. Educating locals on the importance of clean drinking water and the usage of Purifaayas, the ceramic water filters that Spouts of Water provide

3. Fundraising and donating filters through SPOUTS of Water
